India Australia Energy Alliance Targets Net Zero Goals

Prime Minister Narendra Modi & his Australian counterpart Anthony Albanese

India and Australia have officially launched the Renewable Energy Partnership (REP) to enhance bilateral investment in the renewable energy sectors. This milestone was marked as Prime Minister Narendra Modi engaged in discussions with Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese on the sidelines of the G20 Summit in Rio de Janeiro. The leaders convened for the 2nd India-Australia Annual Summit, reaffirming their commitment to advancing the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership across various areas, including defence, security, trade, education, skills development, sports, space exploration, mobility, and people-to-people connections.

The launch of the Renewable Energy Partnership was a significant highlight, building on the commitments made during the inaugural India-Australia Annual Summit. Both Prime Ministers emphasized their shared ambition to accelerate climate action through cooperation and leveraging their complementary capabilities. In a joint statement, they expressed confidence that the partnership would pave the way for tangible collaboration in key areas such as solar photovoltaic (PV), green hydrogen, energy storage solutions, and renewable energy workforce training.

The partnership is designed to create a comprehensive framework for practical engagement, prioritizing two-way investments in renewable energy projects and allied sectors. Focus areas will include solar PV, green hydrogen technology, and energy storage, as well as initiatives to develop a skilled workforce ready for the growing demands of the renewable energy industry. These efforts align with both nations’ aspirations to meet net-zero carbon emission targets.

Prime Minister Albanese highlighted the significance of this collaboration, emphasizing the shared goals of facilitating a sustainable energy transition. He expressed enthusiasm about the initiatives set forth, which aim to propel investments and cooperative efforts in renewable energy projects. “Our renewable energy partnership is officially launched,” he announced, underscoring the critical role of bilateral efforts in achieving ambitious climate objectives. He reiterated the importance of collaborative work in the renewable sector, focusing on innovations like solar technology, green hydrogen production, and future workforce training.

Through this partnership, India and Australia are poised to strengthen their strategic ties while contributing meaningfully to global climate action and the renewable energy transition.
